@@@@@They find a young bright student out of business school and begin "grooming" that person to someday take over the company So these bright young employees do not specialize in one department; they are moved from department to department to learn all the aspects of business systemsThe rich often "groom" their children or the children of others By doing so, their children gain an overall knowledge of the operations of the business and how the various departments interrelate
For the World War II generation, it was considered "bad" to skip from company to companyToday, it is considered smart Since people will skip from company to company, rather than seek greater specialization, why not seek to "learn" more than "earn In the short term, it may earn you less In the long term, it will pay off in large dividends
The main management skills needed for success are:

    1The management of cash flow
2The management of systems (including yourself and time with family)The management of people

The most important specialized skills are sales and understanding marketingIt is the ability to sell--therefore, to communicate to another human being, be it a customer, employee, boss, spouse or child-that is the base skill of personal successIt is communication skills such as writing, speaking and negotiating that are crucial to a life of successIt is a skill that I work on constantly, attending courses or buying educational tapes to expand my knowledge
As I have mentioned, my educated dad worked harder and harder the more competent he becameHe also became more trapped the more specialized he gotAlthough his salary went up, his choices diminishedSoon after he was locked out of government work, he found out how vulnerable he really was professionallyIt is like professional athletes who suddenly are injured or are too old to playTheir once high-paying position is gone, and they have limited skills to fall back onI think that is why my educated dad sided so much with unions after thatHe realized how much a union would have benefited h

Several people had at one time or another made it a point to tell Hearn that he liked men only in the abstract and never in the particular, a cliché of course, an oversimplification, but not without casual truthHe despised the six field officers at the adjacent table because no matter how much they might hate kikes, niggers, Russians, limeys, micks, they loved one another, tampered gleefully with each other's wives at home, got drunk together without worrying about dropping their guard, went joyously through their income-bracket equivalents of shooting up a whorehouse on Saturday nightBy their very existence they had warped the finest minds, the most brilliant talents of Hearn's generation into something sick, more insular than the Conn-Dalleson-HobartsYou always ended by catering to them, or burrowing fearfully into the little rathole still allowed
And the heat by now had banked itself in the tent, was almost licking at his bodyThe mutter, the clatter of tinware against tinware rasped like a file against his brainA mess orderly scurried by, putting a bowl of canned peaches on each of the tables

Hearn heard the sharp cold accents of his own speech coming out of his chest"Colonel, how do you know all that?" Beneath the table his legs were weak with anger
Conn turned to Hearn in surprise, stared at him across the six feet separating their chairs, the perspiration tatted lavishly in big droplets on his red pocked noseHe was doubtful for a moment, uncertain whether the question was friendly or not, obviously bothered by the minor breach of discipline involved"What do you mean, how do I know, Hearn?" he asked
Hearn paused, trying to keep it within boundsHe was aware abruptly that most of the officers in the tent were staring at them"I don't think you know too much about it, Colonel

"Yes, Lootenant?" Croft was opening a breakfast ration, and now he threw away the cardboard wrapper he had been holding in his hand, and strode over toward him
"Why didn't you wake me up when Martinez came back last night?"
"Couldn't do anythin' about it till the morning," Croft drawled
"Yeah, well, in the future you can let me decide that He returned Croft's stare, looked into his impenetrable blue eyes"What did Martinez see?"
Croft slit the top off the inner waxed carton of the ration and spilled out the contentsHis back tingled with a nervous flush as he spoke"The pass is empty as far as he wentHe thinks those Japs hit us yesterday were the only ones in the pass, and they just left it open now He had wanted to postpone telling Hearn this as long as possible, had even hoped irrationally that it would not be necessaryThe nervous needles pricked his flesh againCarefully suspended from his thoughts was the idea behind thisHe looked at the ground as he talkedWhen he finished, he turned to look at the guard on the hill crest above them"Keep your eyes open, Wyman," he called softly"Goddammit, man, you oughta had enough sleep
There was something fishy about this"It sounds weird that they'd leave the pass empty," Hearn murmured Croft had finished opening the small tin of ham and eggs, and was dishing it neatly into his mouth with his spoon He stared at his feet again"Maybe we ought to try the mountain, Lootenant

@@@@@Since Flannagan and Rachel Swayne had left
nearly three hours ago, he had searched every foot of the general’s study, as well as the dead
soldier’s separate bedroom on the second floorHe had placed the items he intended to take on the
brass coffee table; he studied them nowThere were three brown leather-bound covers, each equal
in size, each holding inserted spiral-bound pages; they were a desk setThe first was an
appointments calendar; the second, a personal telephone book in which the names and numbers
were entered in ink; the last was an expense diary, barely touchedAlong with these were eleven
office messages of the telephone notepad variety, which Jason found in Swayne’s pockets, a golfclub
scorecard and several memoranda written at the PentagonFinally, there was the general’s
wallet containing a profusion of impressive credentials and very little moneyBourne would turn
everything over to Alex and hope further leads would be found, but as far as he could determine, he
had turned up nothing startling, nothing dramatically relevant to the modern MedusaAnd that
bothered him; there had to be somethingThis was the old soldier’s home, his sanctum sanctorum
inside that home—something! He knew it, he felt it, but he could not find itSo he started again,
not foot by foot now; instead, inch by inch
Fourteen minutes later, as he was removing and turning over the photographs on the wall behind
the desk, the wall to the right of the cushioned bay window that overlooked the lawn outside, he
recalled Conklin’s words about checking the windows and the curtains so that no one could enter or
    observe the scene inside
Christ, it must be a mess in there
It’s not very pleasantThe panes of the central bay window frame were splattered with blood and membranethe small brass latch? Not only was it free from its catch, the window itself was open—
barely open, but nevertheless it was openBourne knelt on the cushioned seat and looked closely at
the shiny brass fixture and the surrounding panes of glassThere were smudges among the rivulets
of dried blood and tissue, coarse pressings on the stains that appeared to widen and thin them out
into irregular shapesThen below the sill he saw what kept the window from closingThe end of
the left drape had been drawn out, a small piece of its tasseled fabric wedged beneath the lower
window frameJason stepped back bewildered but not really surprisedThis was what he had been
looking for, the missing piece in the complex puzzle that was the death of Norman Swayne

Well, what the hell could he do but send a platoon up to occupy that empty bivouac? If they were able to do it without difficulty, he would start worrying then about what to do nextA fragile breeze stirred against his face and he thought with longing of the beach and the pleasantly chill ocean water, the palm trees silhouetted against the shoreSomewhere in the jungle miles away from him something was happening to the JapaneseMaybe their G-3 was sitting on the can now too
But something was wrong with themThe Jap corpses lately looked skinnierAll these islands were supposed to be blockaded, not getting any supplies, but of course you could never depend on the Navy to tell the truth on thatWhy did he have to make these decisions? He lost track of the minutes listening to the rapt absorptive buzzing of the flies under the latrine boardsOne or two whipped against his naked flanks and he grunted with displeasureThey damn sure needed a new latrine
He lifted himself, did a makeshift job with the sodden paper which had become drenched in the night's rainThere ought to be some better way of making a cover for it than to use a NoThe Major tried to think of some other way to keep the paper dryWhat a lazy day it was
He got up and stopped off at officers' mess to get a can of iced beer"How're you doin', Major?" one of the cooks askedSomething was bothering him"Oh, yeah, listen, O'Brien, I been gettin' the GIs againYou keeping your pots clean?"
    "You ought to know, Major
He grunted again, looked about under the tent at the empty wooden tables, the benches flanking themThe gray metal officers' dishes were already laid out"You oughtn't to make the setting too early," the Major said"It just lets the flies horse around on them
"Okay, do something about it He waited until O'Brien started collecting the plates, and then walked across the bivouac to the operations
